Your front door is your first impression. It gets more exposure than any other part of your house and can really tell a story about who you are.
That’s why it’s important to think carefully about what design you want. You’ll need to decide style, size and material. You’ll need to take into account security, energy efficiency and you’ll need to make sure it fits your budget!
You should also be sure that the door is built to last by a quality provider who offers a generous guarantee.
o-brainer – make sure it fits your entryway! Do you want a single door or a double? Would you like a front door with side panels? And you need to bear in mind that any ornamental elements will need framing for support.
A well-made and fitted modern front door should help you keep energy bills down by keeping the cold out and the heat in over the winter. Sometimes it’s worth paying a little more up-front in order to reduce your long-term energy bills.
As well as fit the rest of your home, your front door should say something about you personally. There are a huge variety of doors out so there’s something for everyone. Would plain white suit? Rosewood? Golden oak?
You should look at other colours, materials and glass styles until you find the right combination for you. And they work best when they compliment your windows (or vice versa!).
There are also optional extras to look out for – letter plates, knockers, spy viewers and numerals are all things that can make your door a little more individualised.
Clearly a big concern when buying a front door. Three dead bolts are a good idea, and toughened glass is a must. You could also look into keyless door systems which offer the very best safety and security, and are police approved.
Composite front doors are also excellent when it comes to security – often 44mm thick (compared to the normal 28mm) they have super-strong structural frames and stand up to the weather extremely well.
The company you choose to fit your new door should have an excellent reputation for service and quality, or you could find yourself with problems down the line.
You should also look out for guarantees to ensure your door is built to last. A 10-year guarantee is the holy grail and would give you extra peace of mind.
